The Blues suffered a humiliating day at the Etihad Stadium, conceding four goals before the half-hour mark against Manchester City and eventually losing 6-0.
Chelsea fans may not have held much hope travelling to face the champions – but the nature of the opening 45 minutes has led to some supporters to call for Maurizio Sarri’s head.
But could Mourinho, who has been sacked twice by the west London in recent years, really be returning for a third stint in charge?
Football fans certainly think it could happen.
“Chelsea should recall Mourinho,” one tweeted.
“Hey Chelsea, Mourinho’s available…” said one.
“Wouldn’t surprise me if Chelsea sacked Sarri and brought back Mourinho,” another added.
“The Chelsea hierarchy must accept that open play attacking football isn’t for them and employ Mourinho again,” one wrote.
“So…Chelsea are sacking Sarri and replacing him with Mourinho yes?” one said.
“Oh Chelsea fans get a grip and call your boy Mourinho home. None of this Guus Hiddink talk,” added a sixth.
“Mourinho gonna be Chelsea manager by the end of the day,” one said.
Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea for the second time in 2015 after overseeing a disastrous title defence, leaving the club in December while sitting 16th in the table.
The Portuguese coach is out of work after being shown the door by Manchester United in December.
Mourinho has also turned some sections of the Stamford Bridge against him with his comments and actions in recent years.
After being labelled ‘Judas’ by Chelsea fans at his former stomping ground this season, the 55-year-old stuck three fingers up to home supporters, representing the three Premier League titles he won with the club.
Mourinho has recently been linked with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
