The Uruguayan’s entourage confirmed this morning that he would not be fit for the trip to Old Trafford.

Cavani scored from the spot in Saturday night’s win over Bordeaux but immediately clutched his thigh whilst celebrating.

Manager Thomas Tuchel took no chances and substituted the club’s record goalscorer.

The Parisians were already going to be missing Neymar but his fellow South American will now join him as an absentee for the trip to Manchester.

“We are no longer looking at Plan B, but Plan D!”

Speaking this morning, prior to the announcement from Cavani’s team that he would miss the last-16 tie, Tuchel was already ominous about his chances of making the trip across the channel.

He told French broadcaster Telefoot: “There is no good news this morning. He has undergone exams and there will be more tests here at the training centre.

“My feeling is that it will be very difficult for him to feature in Manchester.

“I think that the news will not be very good. I still have a little hope, but the first tests were not good.”

Tuchel will be hoping to navigate a rejuvenated Man Utd side – who won again at Fulham on Saturday – and guide PSG to a first quarter-final for three years.

The club’s hierarchy are desperate to achieve continental success but the absence of two players who have cost the club close to £300m is damaging.

Their German coach admits contingency plans have gone out of the window and highlighted the need for experienced players in a game of Tuesday’s magnitude.

He continued: “I am worried, but only because we are missing key players. In matches like these, decisive Champions League games.

“You absolutely need your key men as they are experienced in handling pressure in matches like this one.

“There were many contingency plans: without Neymar, without Marco [Verratti), and now Edinson [Cavani].
