And the two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea knows what they must do to become champions next season.
Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are busy battling it out at the top for glory come May.
But United, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guidance, are showing they have the quality and team spirit to compete going forward.
Their disastrous first half to the campaign saw Jose Mourinho suffer the sack at Old Trafford.
However, the squad has looked totally reinvigorated with Solskjaer at the helm.
As thing stand, United’s immediate focus is on the race for the top four with Chelsea and Arsenal.
Matic, though, has one eye on the 2019/20 season already.
Solskjaer is putting himself into contention for the manager’s job on a permanent basis, given he has overseen 10 wins in 11 games across all competitions.
“Chelsea have [played] one game less but we are happy for three more points”
And experienced star midfielder Matic knows extended winning streaks are vital as consistency brings reward at the top level in football.
“We knew that if we win then we will be in fourth position,” Matic said after United’s 3-0 win at Fulham yesterday.
“Of course, Chelsea have [played] one game less but we are happy for three more points.
“We played well, we fight for each other. Clean sheet, we scored three goals, so we are very pleased.
“To win the league you need to win the games like we did in the last seven, eight games.
“So you need to win six, seven games in a row, then you can drop some points, to draw, to lose one game.
“But we have to continue, we have to continue like this. We have to learn always and this is the way to play.
“This is the way to fight so if we play like this for the next season then we will be one of the teams who is going to fight for the title.”
Manchester United do not play again in the Premier League until they host arch-rivals and title contenders Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, February 24.
